Jon Bon Jovi

His music is more penetrating than the sharpest knife. The Q Questionnaire makes Jon Bon Jovi reveal some of his hidden traits by exploring the innermost reaches of his dynamic personality.

What was the first gig you went to?

Rush, Heart and The Doobie Brothers, 1976, in a high school football field, Eyrie, Pennsylvania. I remember smoking a lot, and that it was about to rain, so they flipped the bill. Rush was supposed to open the show.

Which song do you wish you had written?

There's a ton of them. Creep by Radiohead. Nothing compares 2U. A bunch of Elvis Costello stuff. My jenny Valentine. Bat Out of Hell. Walk This Way by Aerosmith. Not Another Day In Paradise by Phil Collins.

What is your most treasured material possession?

A Superbowl ring from the Giants. The original demo version of We've Gotta Get Out OF This Place. An Asbury Jukes jacket which Southside Johnny gave me.

What do you think of Bob Dylan?

I think he's a god. He, Costello and Waits are the three greatest living lyricists and songwriters. And he is the most prolific.

What is the best advice you've ever received?

Brian May told me to "take the blinkers off and enjoy the ride".

What is the biggest myth about fame?

That it's wonderful; that it's 24- hours a day, seven days a week of parties, no pressures, and you're never lonely. That's a great misconception.

Describe yourself in a few words.

Introspective, hopeful, active, loyal.

Is there one piece of criticism that sticks in your mind?

Kerrang! or Raw called me "Bon Jerkoff" many years ago. I've since become very good friends with the guy who wrote it. But you don't believe the good if you can't take the bad.

What ambitions do you still have to fulfill?

A lot. I'd like to be a much better writer, singer and player. I'd like to do some movie stuff, straight acting, just for the challenge.

Are you afraid of failure?

Everybody's afraid of failure to an extent, but I'm not so concerned about the failure of a record, I'm more worried about failure in life.

Who is your best male friend and your best female friend?

Obie, our recording engineer, andthe girls who work in my office, Margaret and Christine.

What music would you have played at your funeral?

No music, let's keep it quiet so I can hear everybody moaning about me.

Du you have anything to declare?

Yeah. I'm on my way to customs right now. And, as usual, I'll look them in the eye and say, "No!" I'll look them right in the eye and lie. What is your most unpleasant characteristic?

That I don't enjoy the ride as much as I could or I should.

What is your greatest fear?

Something happening to my baby.
