"Keep The Faith" Review 28 July 2000
Bed Of Roses - A Pearl of Music

Bed Of Roses "Walkthrough"

A review by TheFlash / theflash@netvisao.pt

Hey, I'm back! :)

I recently read a review to Keep the Faith, from 'Bon JoviGirl' in which this great JBJ fan, said she didn't understand all the lyrics to what she called a great love song, which is not wrong at all!

So, I will try to tell this great song's story, in a complete (I hope) walkthough! To those who already know the story, please forguive me for telling it again, but I've noticed there are so many fans that don't know it, and I'm sure, would love to! If any of you detect mistakes, in it, please, fill me in on them, but I think I got it right!

After this brief intro, let's go to what does matter:

BED OF ROSES

Jon wrote this song shortly after a fight with Dorothea, his wife! I heard an interview with Jon, with which I got a pretty good idea about the fight's reason, but that I won't write here, because I don't think I have the right to talk about their private life, even if he did!

Jon was at an hotel, in Los Angeles if I'm not mistaken, and after the fight, over the phone, he got drunk! When he wake up, with a, needless to say, huge hangover, he sits at an old piano, that was part of the "furniture" of that hotel room! According to Jon, the piano was so bad, or his hangover was so big, that even each stroke of a key would make his head hurt! Still, he made this 'confession', as he called it in the MTV concert "An Evening With Bon Jovi". He started writing it, more or less the same way we can see it the song's video clip! He would try a couple of notes, and then write it down in the paper! More notes, more writing followed, and he created was would be known as one of the most beautifull love songs ever created, with one tremendous advantage: It was the truth! It was what Jon wanted to say to Dorothea, that morning!

Walkthrough: Now, I'll will try to explain the lyrics for every section of the song!

"Sitting here, waisted and wounded, at this old piano!"
Jon was at the old piano, trying to put his feelings out in a song! I believe when he started writing this, he wasn't sure it would ever be released! He wasn't sure he'd ever show it to Dorothea! As he said, this song is like a confession! And you don't go around, showing your confessions to everyone! This was for him, and for him alone!

Anyway, I think Jon was felling a little lost here! "Trying hard to capture the moment, this morning I don't know", I believe it's his way of telling, trying to figure out what to do with his life! And he doesn't know what, specially, that particular morning... Why?

"Cause a bottle of vodka is still lodged in my head, some blonde gave me nightmares, I think that she's still in my bed"... that's why! We was tired, he was feeling drunk, and he still had the image of some girl he met last night!

"While I dream about movies they won't make of me when I'm dead" This is a lack-of-faith statement! He's afraid to loose her and he knows his life will end if it happens! If one is not happy, if one doesn't want to live, one won't be famous, and one won't be loved for anyone!

"With an ironclad fist I wake up and French kiss the morning". Now this one is very subjective! It means lots of things, but in this case I believe Jon was feeling like he couldn't care less about life itself! Not now that he doesn't know his future with her! He's in pain, he's suffering, and without her, he doesn't want anything!

"While some marching band keeps its own beat in my head" Once again, he's saying he's not feeling well because of the hangover, but also, his conciense is hammering his brain over the reason of the fight!

"While we're talking About all of the things that I long to believe About love and the truth and what you mean to me"
In this confession, Jon is talking to Dorothea. He's telling her here, what he knows he should tell her in person! His believes, their love, the truth of their relationship, and what Dorothea really means to Jon!

And Jon knows just what she means to him: "And the truth is baby you're all that I need"

The chorus to this song, is like a redemption, Jon's redemption! "I wanna lay you down on a bed of roses For tonite I sleep on a bed on nails I wanna be just as close as the Holy Ghost is And lay you down on bed of roses" He's shatered by the distance between them, and he wants to end it! Wants to make things in a way they don't ever be apart, a way they won't ever have to fight again!

Jon admits this distance in the next couple of lines: "Well I'm so far away That each step that I take is on my way home". Because of this, he says he would do anything to be with her, to see her, to hold her, as we can see in "A king's ransom in dimes I'd given each night to see through this payphone".

"Still I run out of time Or it's hard to get through" is another lack-of-faith statement! He's afraid! Afraid of being too late to make things better, and worse, afraid that he can't find the strength to do it! To make right from wrong, peace from fight!

"Till the bird on the wire flies me back to you I'll just close my eyes and whisper, baby blind love is true"
With exactly the opposite feeling as the above, this statement is a faith proof! Jon's saying that no matter what, he'll want to be with her! That he will do anything to stop fighting and reminds Dorothea that he loves her unconditionally!

Once again, the chorus!

Now for the bridge! Jon tries to explain her how was his life since the fight, more exactly, how was the last night!
"The hotel bar hangover whiskey's gone dry, The barkeeper's wig's crooked" are the leads of a terrible night! It's not about a wig of course! Jon was so alone, feeling so down, he even had time to notice this little insignificant details! Jon's night was void! His heart was empty!

"And she's giving me the eye I might have said yeah But I laughed so hard I think I died". In a result of his emptyness, and his carelessness, Jon didn't even bother to accept or discard one certain invictation from a girl in the bar! He actually laughs at the girl over one blink of an eye! He couldn't care less about other people's feelings, when his own were so hurt!

"Now when you close your eyes you know I'll be thinking about you While my mistress she calls me To stand in her spotlight again". This is a weird, but very familiar to lovers feeling! It's about hope, but also about loss! Jon knows she thinks about him, but he doesn't know if he'll be strong enough to resist "extra-work". Because of this, he assures Dorothea that even if and when it happens, she is his only thought!

"Tonite I won't be alone But you know that don't Mean I'm not lonely". This one is a double-senced statement! It either means that he'll be with some other girl that night, or that he'll be around any other person or persons! Anyway, he wants her to know, that without her, he's always alone, because of that void he feels inside!

"I've got nothing to prove For it's you that I'd die to defend". Another faith statement! Jon will do anything for her, he doesn't care what, as long as she's ok! It is a perfect ending to this song, because it means Jon will not give up.

And once again, the chorus!...

And so it ends one of the greatest songs in the history of Rock " Roll!

I hope I could be of help, and if someone wants to contact me, please do to the e-mail above!

Great rockin' and keep the faith
