"New Jersey" Review 20 May 2000
A Truly Massive Heavy Album

A review by J. Jack Flash

New Jersey from ī88 is Bon Joviīs heaviest album. As a sequel to now classic Slippery When Wet a lot was expected from it. It filled all expections and gave much more; from honest rockīnroll to relaxed jamming. Ratings from 1-10.

1. LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME
A great starter to the album. A magnificent and very bombastic drum intro. I just love those drums in the beginning. After itīs calmed down a bit guitars come in and celebration has begun. Pure heavy rock to the end. A great song, especially great as live, when it just rocks the roof off.
8/10

2. BAD MEDICINE
Woah!! That incredible guitar in the start makes shivers down my spine every time I hear it. Great, funny lyrics and mighty drums. Richies guitar is the centre of everything. Bad Medicine just blows you away.
10/10

3. BORN TO BE MY BABY
You just get hooked with this fast and great beat of the song. Ticoīs drums are just great and Davidīs piano gives more and more speed to it. A great song definetly. Funny that this wasnīt on the Crossroad but LYHOM was, though Baby charted better.
9/10

4. LIVING IN SIN
The lyrics of the song seem to be talking about gays. Two lovers parents donīt accept their sons sexual references and say their living in sin. If itīs true or not, I donīt know. Anyway, the lyrics are good. David and Jon are best here. Simply great song.
8/10

5. BLOOD ON BLOOD
Well, in my opinion this is the best song of the album and one of Bon Joviīs all time greats. It has everything. Absolutely great lyrics, Ticos powerful drumming, Richies strong guitar, Davids great piano, Alecs nice bass, and Jon at his best. This is THE SONG of the album. It doesnīt get much better than this.
10/10

6. HOMEBOUND TRAIN
A simple rocknīroll song. Nice those train- effects. Simple lyrics and honest rock. I guess itīs the weakest track of the album, but still not bad at all.
6/10

7. WILD IS THE WIND
A very powerful song. About a broken love. Acoustic start is nice. Again strong guitars by Richie. A nice one, but I donīt catch it so very well.
7/10

8. RIDE COWBOY RIDE
I donīt know why the sound quality of this song is shitty, but if thatīs not counted, itīs a good song. It lasts just over a minute, but is fun troughout. I really like it.
8/10

9. STICK TO YOUR GUNS
Hereīs a nice contrast, after a really stormy beginning it suddenly changes to acoustic guitars. Basically this is a sequel to Wanted Dead Or Alive. Certainly a good song, but I used to like it more in the past.
7/10

10. IīLL BE THERE FOR YOU
A sad lovesong about a guy who swares heīll do anything for his girl. I like Jon sounding so sad and desperated, and Richies guitar brings more feelings to it. This started the ERA of "Bon Joviīs larger than life lovesongs", where some examples from the series are Bed OF Roses, Always and This Ainīt A Love Song. A great lovesong definetly.
9/10

11. 99 IN THE SHADE
The same thing as in the Homebound Train: "Letīs rock!!" Here we can see Tommy and Gina again. Simple happy rocknīroll troughout.
6/10

12. LOVE FOR SALE
Well, I think this is great, one of the highlights of the album. A bluesy jam with crazy lyrics. Nice acoustic guitar solo by Richie. This is a real fun. The part in the end where Jon and Richie are talking to each other gives me always a great laugh. I just love this.
9/10

OVERALL New Jersey is a great album. It has many incredible performances and just a few weak spots. I donīt think itīs just as good as Keep The Faith or These Days, but itīs great definetly.
