"Slippery When Wet" Review 27 February 2002

A review by Christine / Kira1214@hotmail.com

Slippery When Wet

1. Let It Rock

The first time I heard this song, I thought it was nothing special. Now, I absolutely love it. The beat is great and it's a wonderful song to dance to. The lyrics aren't earthshattering, but they're not meant to be. It's just a fun song. Let It Rock! 8.5/10

2. You Give Love A Bad Name

The first Bon Jovi classic on this CD. Many people fell in love with Bon Jovi because of this song and it's not hard to understand why. This song is still played at concerts today...a great song. 9/10

3. Livin' On A Prayer

The second classic song on this CD. This song was a hit in part because so many people could relate to the story of Tommy and Gina. "You live for the fight when it's all that you've got!" 9/10

4. Social Disease

I have to say this is my least favorite song on the album. The intro is not that appealing to me...and it's kind of a forgettable song. Still, it's a Bon Jovi song, and it's not that horrible. The chorus *is* a little catchy. 6.5/10

5. Wanted Dead Or Alive

The third classic song on Slippery. Every time I hear this song, I think of Jon and Richie just sitting there, with cowboy hats and guitars. That's part of what Bon Jovi is all about. "I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all." 8/10

6. Raise Your Hands

One of my favorite parts in this song is the very end where Jon says, very softly, "Sayreville, New Jersey". It's so cute. Whenever Jon says "New Jersey", in that voice...sorry, that's getting a little off the subject. Basically, it's another fun, good rock song. I don't know why it's not played at more Bon Jovi concerts. 9/10

7. Without Love

The first time I heard this, like "Let It Rock", I didn't like it so much. It was very forgettable to me. Then I listened to it again and it made more of an impression. It's a simple love song, but it's very well done, in a gray area between ballad and upbeat. Beware - this song is very catchy, and it may get stuck in your head. 8/10

8. I'd Die For You

I think this is my favorite song on the CD. That *is* subject to change, however. This was one of the first ten Bon Jovi songs I ever heard and I loved it instantly. The lyrics are beautiful and Jon's voice is wonderful. A classic Bon Jovi song, even if it never was a hit or even a single. 10/10

9. Never Say Goodbye

The fourth classic song on the CD, even though I don't think it was released as a US single. A wonderfully written song by Jon & Richie about high school and leaving your friends and your love behind. Although Jon tends to trivialize this song in interviews, it's a good song. And since I heard it performed in Albany, it has taken on a whole new meaning for me. It's now one of my favorite songs ever. 9.5/10

10. Wild In The Streets

I love this song. It's fun to dance to, has a great beat, and good lyrics. This is Bon Jovi at their best, singing about having fun in New Jersey in the summer, in the vein of "99 In The Shade", which is almost like a sequel to this song. "You don't walk in vain in the kids' parade, 'cause this is my hometown!" 9.5/10

***
Definitely Bon Jovi's milestone album, as well as one every fan should have. What are you waiting for? Go buy it.
