I loved it!! I thought it was an incredible movie. Tom Cruise is great in it. It was a bit violent, but I still enjoyed it. It reminded me a bit of Braveheart, only I enjoyed Last Samurai more.

I think it's only out here on the 17th, I'm not sure, but I'll be going for the first screening. It looks ace.

I actually bought that this afternoon but only had a quick flick through it, thanks for the info though. I'll probably go for the first showing anyway...as I only go back to Uni on the 19th, lol.

It is good, but it has some unintentionally funny moments, and some 'hollywood' moments:

When the emperor speaks at the end 'I dream of a unified Japan'...

When Ken Watanabe (the last samurai) dies he sees the perfect cherry blossom (which he has been searching all of his life for) just moments before his death...

How can Ken Watanabe's character speak perfect English when everyone else in the village speaks no english at all?

Mount Fuji isn't that close to Yokohama. That is a big lie.

Also, knowing that most of the film was made in New Zealand ruins its authenticity.

If Tom Cruise didn't win an Oscar for his role in Magnolia, then he doesn't deserve to win one for his role in The Last Samurai. Johnny Depp deserves the Oscar this year.

You got really good point there. Afcourse director taught the perfect english just to Leader coz if he start speaking in Japness then movie won't go forward.

OK here's what I think about the language issue. We learn to speak other languages. Tom Cruise's character learned some Japanese and had already learned to speak the language of the American Indian tribe (I'm sorry I don't remember which tribe it was right now) he spent time with as well. Wantanabe told Tom Cruise's character he wanted to have a conversation with him in English. To me that meant that he was interested in learning to speak English better. Wantanabe hadn't spent his entire life in the village. He did go to the city as well where there were English speaking people. Maybe I'm oversimplifying things.

Ken Watanabe speaks English (in the film) better then most English teachers at my school.

Like I said, I may be oversimplifying things. I just don't think it's highly unlikely that he spoke English. Granted, he spoke English very well, but it's not unreasonable for him to have the ability to speak English. At least that's how I took it.
