Just saw the 2 Harry Potter movies back to back, I think they are fantastic! Can't wait for the new one :D
Should I read the books too?

I am newly obsessed with Harry Potter. I watched the movies while I was in bed with pneumonia in November/December and then read all the books. I couldn't believe how fantastic the movies were and knew that the books must be pretty amazing if they were turned into great films. I definitely reccommend reading the books.
It's a like a modern day Wizard of Oz, I think. There's the magic of course, but it also captures the imagination and there's an intelligence to the story that appeals to adults as well as kids. It's just scarey enough to be interesting, but it won't send a kid to bed with nightmares (at least I don't think it would).
The books are great for adults. I think adults see things on a different level. They're definitley not just kiddie books. JK Rowling is a genius! The only thing I don't like is she said that Harry and Hermione don't become a couple. :( I think they'd be perfect for each other.

ofcourse u got to read the books, the movie is not complete, its just giving you images of different parts of the book, first i saw the movie and i didnt understand it at all, when i read the book i found out a lot of things wasnt mentioned in the movie, the movie is like flashes of the movie, they show a scene, then it cuts to another place, and u wont findout what was happening between these 2 scenes....

I read the books before watching the films and was somewhat disappointed (well, I usually am... ). The books are much, much better. They are complete as someone already pointed out.
THe third film looks good though. I'm looking forward to seeing it in spite of myself!

The first 2 movies were basically, when it's broken down to everything, crap. but they were still a bit entertaining because it was somewhat of a version of the books on the screen.
They got a new director of the third one, Alfonso Cuaron. So, i'm anticipating this one to be better; and hopefully my anticipation will be filled. :) But then i just read that the third one is going to run for less then 2 1/2 hours...which is the shortest film of the series so far...so i'm think they're going to do a hell of a lot of cutting out of the story, because that's the biggest book out of the three that's been released.
The fourth one is going to be extremley extravagent, i hope. It's going to have a higher budget the Return of the King, which is the most expensive film to date.

If I had read the books prior to seeing the movies, I probably would have been disappointed with the films. There are certainly things I'd like to be in the movies that are not. Peeves, for instance. But since I saw the movies first, I thought they were great. I imagine I'll be a little disappointed with Prisoner of Azkaban since I've read the book--even though it's my least favorite book of the series so far. I wish they'd make the films longer to put more in them.
I guess one problem they have is the cast is outgrowing their roles. Each film takes about 11 months. Daniel Radcliffe has said that if he can do all the films, he would like to do them because even by the time they finish he'll still be young and have options.
I have to admit that I wish it was time for the Goblet of Fire movie because it's my favorite of the books. There's talk of making it into a 2 part movie and releasing the two parts within a few months or making it a 4 hour movie with an intermission.

The director for the 4th one, Mike Newell, announced that it's possible that it can be done in 1 film; that's the way he wants it done. He believes that if it were to be made into 2 parts that it would undermine the book and make it look foolish. I agree :)

Good! I would rather see it in one film.... even if it's 4 hours! But there's so much to cover.
I've read quite a bit about them recasting the kids and I think that would be a huge mistake. Those faces are associated with the characters now. I'd rather suspend disbelief and think of the kids as mature-looking 17 year olds when the time comes than see new kids in the roles. What about you? There's such a great chemistry in the cast. I can't imagine them being replaceable.
And there's far too much chemistry between Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Wastson for Hermione to be paired with Ron instead of Harry!

I agree; there is wonderful chemistry between the three of them. I think that if they do decide to recast, that they won't find three kids with the same chemistry - and it'll ruin a lot of what the story's about.
But on the other hand, they are growing quite fast and out growing their characters. They're already a few years older and mature looking then the characters, and the longer the take to make the movies, the older they get, and the more probable for a recast :( the only solution for this would be to make the films faster. And get them out now...i want to see them :(
They were going to film both the 3rd and 4th at the same time, so that the children wouldn't be so aged...but then they thought that would be too much work for the kids, which i agree with; they're just 13 or 14 or somewhere around that - they wouldn't be able to handle a lord of the rings filming schedule, in my opinion. Some of the LOTR's cast could barely handle it themselves :P
I'm just hoping for great things from the upcoming films :D

Of course it doesn't help that the 6th and 7th books aren't even out yet! LOL
Did you know that JK Rowling already has the last chapter of the last book written? That's pretty cool. The woman is a genius. What an amazing imagination!!

It's going to take years to get the last films out  I'm really betting that they'll recast for those ones, even the 5th probably. by the time the 6th or 7th film rolls around, maybe i'll be able to direct them  that would be great! :D
Yeah, she's amazing! She did so much for those books. It's just really great how the idea just came to her, all formed and everything on a train ride. and she wasn't even thinking about writing or anything! And she has clues in the first book on things that'll happen in the later books (which i can't remember now :| ) -- just absolutely great! Just wonderful....I wish a story would come all ready formed in my mind :( She's damn lucky :P

I think they need to do like they did with the Lord of the Rings movies and film more than one at a time. If they can do that, then the cast can stay longer. It just depends on how fast they mature. If you think about it, the "kids" on Beverly Hills 90210 were all in there 20's and even 30's when they were playing teenagers. It's possible, but they've got to get going a little faster if you ask me.

Unless it takes several more years for books 6 & 7 to come out, I don't think it would be a problem for the current kids to keep their roles. In entertainment, you often just take things for what they represent even if it's a 30 year old playing a 19 year old on 90210 or a 35 year old actress playing the mom of a 20 year old son on a soap opera. In U-571, Jon's character was supposed to be about 25 and he was 38 at the time.

I was surprised at the quality of the first movie, as it came out around the same time as Lord of the Rings and looked like the style was similar from the trailer. You all know where I stand on LOTR, so I was not excited about seeing it. But I enjoyed it very much...I don't think I would want to own it, but I was overall pleased with the film. The books are better though.
