I just got this from www.starwars.com, and I am very excited about it. I guess I'm a bit late hearing about it, but I've been avoiding the Official website incase I see and Episode III spoilers, but I just found this page through Google.

The Star Wars Trilogy on DVD
February 10, 2004

The most requested films for the DVD format will finally become a reality this September as Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox present the eagerly-awaited Star Wars Trilogy for the ultimate home entertainment format. The four-disc collection will be released on September 21 in the U.S. and Canada, with international release dates following closely.
"We know how long fans have waited for this release and how much they have been looking forward to it, so everyone has been working overtime to make sure that the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD is an awesome experience," said Jim Ward, Vice President of Marketing and Distribution for Lucasfilm Ltd. and the DVD collection's Executive Producer.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi will be available in a four-disc set that includes a bonus disc filled with all-new special features -- including the most comprehensive feature-length documentary ever produced about the Star Wars saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of all three films. Each of the three films in the Star Wars Trilogy has been digitally restored and re-mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality.

"First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer. On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the Star Wars films in a fresh and fun way," Ward said. "We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time."

The films of the Star Wars Trilogy will be available exclusively as a collection and will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround EX. All three films are closed-captioned and subtitled in English, French and Spanish in the U.S. Internationally, sound and subtitling specifications will vary by territory.

Keep checking starwars.com over the coming months for more specific details about the content of this must-own DVD set.

THX Mastered, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, most probably presented in 2.35:1 aspect ration, and with a full disc of bonus features....I can't wait.

My hands are shaking also... I was very excited when I heard about it (and still am), although Episode II made me forget about Star Wars a little...

I loved Episode II, went to see it 3 times at the cinema (odd for me as I never usually go more than once).

The UK release date is September 21st I think, but the US release is September 16th, so I may just have to order a R1 copy, lol.

Episode III isn't out until the end of May next year, but I'm really looking forward to it now, but I'm sticking to my new years resolution; not to read any spoilers/rumours about it.

I loved Episode II when I saw it in the cinema (I went twice). But when I had it in my DVD player I realized how digital it is and how bad the actors are (ok, I mean that Anakin guy). But still it is not a waste of time to watch it

Episode III... so still over a year to wait. There's so much to happen in that film, I'm curious how that will happen without making the movie 3 hours long... Until then I'll get my trilogy DVDs and watch it over and over again. Those were classics!

Well here's 3 possibilities for the DVD artwork. These where apparently posted on the official website of the company in charge of the packaging, so they may be official ones, and if so there are 3 to choose from:

I like the first one best, as it looks very dark and has the Death Star on aswell as the Vader helmet. The second one looks good too, but a bit too much focus placed on Vaders helmet. The third one looks a bit fake to me, as the picture of Yoda is actually from Episode II.

Well for starters the Lord Of The Rings sets are 4 discs because the movie takes up 2, thanks to all the crappy audio commentaries, and then there are 2 full discs of bonus stuff because it was all filmed along with the movies, specifically for the comprehensive DVD release.

The Star Wars Trilogy, being made in the late 70's/early 80's, does not have so much bonus material, as at the time it was rare for anyone to film documentaries on movies and such. The movies themselves are only about 2 - 2:30 hours long anyway, so even with and audio commentary or two they would fit on single discs.

The Back To The Future Trilogy DVD Boxset is only 3 discs, and each disc has a Dolby 5.1, dts 5.1 and audio commentary track, plus deleted scenes and outtakes and documentaries....it is possible to fit a LOT on 1 disc, and as LucasFilm has promised the 4th disc of the set will have the best material on it, so don't worry, it should be amazing.

And as for us already having the re-mastered movies on VHS, that's crap, as not only does VHS degrade, but it only has stereo sound and it has a lower quality picture to start with...I can't wait to see them in 2.35:1 with Dolby 5.1 EX sound, should be amazing.
