We don't tend to regard any distinction here in S Cali, so I've always seen them as the same.. just different names. To me, "speed" was a term for "meth" just as "dope" was a term for "marijuana." At one point, that was how people referred to it and is now outdated. Changing it in this case just made it more dramatic.
That is the honest truth.
