Maybe it means more guitar driven? who knows, and as for "no ballads" he may have meant not the love ballads we often heard before, I think Jon probably felt it was too lovey dovey, maybe the ballads are not about love but maybe a more inner personal tone, again who knows I am just purely guessing here. I have to say the song title God bless this mess caught my attention.
