Maybe if it's online they are just showing recent concert footage of BJ/Elton John? Seems a bit optimistic to get it running on such a short turnaround unless it's just a studio performance.

I don't understand why you think it's impossible. Elton John, JBJ and Hozier will be hosting the musical parts of the worldwide event from their respective countries and there are some other performers scheduled to appear too:

The cast of the broadcast, which Gore will anchor from a studio set up at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, will include Duran Duran performing live from that Paris stage and these others participating from around the globe: Bon Jovi, Elton John, Pharrell Williams, Hozier, Neil Young, Mumford & Sons, Fall Out Boy, Vance Joy, Walk the Moon, 30 Seconds to Mars and Boyce Avenue.

I don't see how pre-taping deserves an eye-roll, unless you're just looking for something to be negative about. Late night talk show "HOSTS" pre-tape their shows and they're no less "hosting." Being pre-taped doesn't make it any less entertaining.

In Bon Jovi's case pre-taping might actually be of some advantage since this allows the producers to auto-tune Jon's off-key singing afterwards

In Europe -but maybe in Europe only- the different celebrities and politicians who host or participate in telethons (whatever the cause it is for) do it live, it's the basic principle of a telethon (<marathon), it's about making the effort of donating your time to support a cause at a specific moment, it's not so much about entertaining. Broadcasting a pre-recorded performance kills the whole purpose, they might as well broadcast music videos during 24H and call it "MTV born again"!

Er, not exactly. Sure, there are a lot of live perfomances, but a fair amount is pre-recorded too. Look at the details for Children In Need tonight for example:

What's pre-recorded, it doesn't say it is? On the contrary, I see the words "sing live" & "live performance" everywhere.

Or do you mean that the whole show was recorded before and will be aired tonight? It's a different thing altogether.
