I think something like this happened in Spain back in 2013 as there were no plans for a show due to financial issues but since BWC hit #1 a free show was announced in Vicente Calderon in Madrid by Dr Music.

I was there and I remember they played for free only charging 40€ for the ticket. They announced it like "precio amigo" (friend price) but I think it was because many people complained about the band not playing here because Jon said Spain was going through economic problems at the time or something like that. I don't know if it had something to do with the sales of the album.
