Common sense needs to take over at times but it was clear as day that Jon was referring to the 2016 album... Jon made two statements. One, The new album is done" and the other "It's in various stages of completion"
Jon talks Tongue-In-Cheek at times so maybe you are overlooking his words and taking everything so literal... Saying that the album is completed to him means that the bulk is completed and his part is done. That doesn't mean that there are boxes of cds sitting in a warehouse somewhere collecting dust for the next 9 months... The writing and recording is completed... There might be some mixing, mastering, choice selections, and last minute tweaking going on. But the songs have been written and the band members are done recording. That's what he means and that's how I'm taking it.
As far as the other part goes:
Jon states that BB has a couple of new tracks and this first single is the direction that they are going in musically. So WDR is the direction. (and although not confirmed, I'm hoping that Teardrop is the other song he is referring to when he says "a couple of new ones)
What am I missing here?

Yeah, now you definitely are confused, at least about the last part
Though I find it pretty clear, what she means:
She interprets Jon's statement (as do I BTW) as in that not just WDR, but all the new songs on BB (or the whole BB album, but I would probably disagree on that one) are a hint as to where the band is heading musically.
So that would mean WDR, A Tear Drop To The Sea, and probably some other new songs (minus BB the song, I guess it's clear that's a one-off-fun-f*ck-you-whoever-you-are-kind-of-song), the hint of the direction the band are headed, not just WDR. Which would be great, I think
Also I don't get how you always interpret "a couple of new ones" as "two"? "A couple", as in two people, is a different thing than "a couple of ...", which can easily be more than two, just not less. Even I as a non-native speaker knows and understands that
