2008 Jon sounded good, 2010/2011 he improved even more from there after a rocky 2006. He was absolutely working on his voice.

I'm sorry but if you are a singer you just shouldn't smoke, full stop. If you are a singer that is concerned about your voice enough to get a coach in then you 100% should not be smoking. The fact that he was still ok to smoke and Ok to have it shown in the documentary shows how blasé he was about his voice in my opinion. And (again, also in my opinion) this is why he has the problems he has now. The smoking, the 3 hour shows, the type of songs - there is just no way you can maintain that as you get older. It was taking it's toll on him as early as the early 2000s, so he can't act suprised now that his voice is gone...
