I think people just seem to get confused by the licencing and think that it means distribution

It probably works in both favour really. Jon pays for the album and gets to keep ownership of the album long term.

The label would almost certainly save money by licencing each album for a period (5-10 years usually) than to pay for everything outright, like on a traditional record contract (studio time, band, producer, etc - it all adds up)

So Phil was in Shanks studio recording guitar tracks. With Jon being there recently I wonder if this involves new Bon Jovi songs or it's something else....

Looks to me like he was there as a session player for something different Shanks is currently working on.

Probably, I know Shanks is working on a bunch of different things at the moment. No idea what stage Bon Jovi's album is but it's been some time since Jon started writing/demoing, even though they keep working on a sporadic type schedule nowadays....

Could be why Phil had to bail on NAMM very last minute. The setting looks a lot like Shanks's LA apartment they recorded the backing vocals of Walls in.
