2008 Jon sounded good, 2010/2011 he improved even more from there after a rocky 2006. He was absolutely working on his voice.
I'm sorry but if you are a singer you just shouldn't smoke, full stop. If you are a singer that is concerned about your voice enough to get a coach in then you 100% should not be smoking. The fact that he was still ok to smoke and Ok to have it shown in the documentary shows how blasé he was about his voice in my opinion. And (again, also in my opinion) this is why he has the problems he has now. The smoking, the 3 hour shows, the type of songs - there is just no way you can maintain that as you get older. It was taking it's toll on him as early as the early 2000s, so he can't act suprised now that his voice is gone...

Yeah, but Captain_jovi's set of rules are very intriguing.

A singer can smoke but absolutely he's very dedicated to the quality of his very own work instrument. Nothing this guy says makes any sense.

And please, son, just don't.

From this day perspective, it seems really strange that Jon kept smoking so long (since 90's?). As a multi-millionaire businessman that already had voice problems, he probably devalued risks of smoking to his voice.

But probably it's not just smoking, but age and especially tour after tour, very hard schedule on a voice of an aging vocalist who often sings out of his range (or on the very top of it).

I don't know enough of his vocal coaching on LH tour, but the way he started to hit notes again was very welcomed, however, his tone changed dramatically. If I can take a wild guess, I would guess his coach extracted what he wanted: performance. However, with that more than ever nasal tone and completely unnatural style of singing, I think longevity of his voice took a big hit.

However, I cannot possibly know if his trauma on vocal chords was more nature or nurture, but again guessing, in ordering "guilt" for his deterioration in the bracket of nurture, I would personally weight significantly on first steroid shots in 80's, excessive touring schedule, bad technique and non-orthodox vocal coaching, all before smoking.

He started smoking on the set of Moonlight And Valentino, which was released in 1995 so it was probably shot in 1994.

'Thank You, Goodnight' Hulu documentary shows the rare vulnerable side of Jon Bon Jovi

https://eu.app.com/story/entertainme...a/73412738007/

''Jon and Shanks became the creative nexus of the band in the aughts to the extent that Shanks laid down the acoustic guitar part on “The Fighter” from the album “What About Now,” which was recorded in 2012.That was the point of no return in the relationship between Jon and Sambora, and it’s deftly depicted by Chopra in “Thank You Good Night.”''

Huh. Bobby recorded guitars on some songs on HAND, as far back as 2004. Why did he started caring in 2012?

Bob was there so they could help him take care of his son's health. It's a totally different situation.

Why would you think this is remotely the same? Bobby was a hired gun who just played guitar. Shanks was basically taking Richie's place at this point as co-writer, co-producer and then, here as guitar player.

I wasn't referring to him smoking when I said he was taking care of his voice, I was bucking at you saying there isn't a single part of the doc where he is taking care of his voice. Both don't have to be mutually exlusive as there's literal footage of him working on his voice. I am in total agreement he should not be smoking but in disagreement that he didn't care about his voice in 2007/2008.

Yeah, I think I side closer with this. We'll never know why Richie wasn't involved in recording Wildflower but Gabriel has a valid point that if Shanks's wedging his way into the band is a big reason for the band falling apart, Jon not using Richie on every guitar track for a band album song years prior does strike me as uncomfortable. I know the trend of releasing solo songs as band started as early as 2000 though so it is what it is.
