I still can't believe someone as dedicated and driven as jon would be dumb enough to smoke. His failed attempt at becoming a movie star probably cost us his These Days tone/power between 2000 to 2010. No matter what else you might do, if you smoke you don't care about your voice imo.

I think there was beef between Richie and Shanks.

Scenario...Richie tells Jon maybe its time for a new producer...theyve done a few with Shanks, it's getting a bit boring lets find a new guy etc.
By this time Shanks has foot in the band, he's recorded a few parts and got in on the song writing.
After WANs released to poor reviews, Richie reiterates to Jon we shouldve got new producer etc.
Jon says no he's doing next few albums so deal with it and Richie gets fed up, has family issues and leaves. Thinking he will be asked back after WAN tour.
But.....Jon calls Shanks up to join band.

Let's not forget that the woman Richie was seeing at the time tweeted "well somes finally got their place in the spotlight like they wanted" which was aimed at Shanks being in Bon Jovi.

Yeah I don't think it went down like that. Shanks didn't play with the band live until promo for This House began, a full three years later.

It's no secret Shanks played with Richie on HAND and Lost Highway. (I assume The Circle but those first two albums are the only ones I've heard specifc examples about in intervies). But it's a huge difference to play with someone dong additional guitar, and someone else playing on the songs and you just do solos, a few rhythms and backing vocals. That'd bug the crap out of me too.

So does that imply that Richie returning would require for Shanks to leave (in his capacity as a producer, too)?

Tough to say, I don't know what beef they have. I think the doc will help answer that question.

Which part of he never cared about his voice you didn't understand ? Everyone in this thread is saying this.

Jon is a business man and he always was. When you're young you simply don't have to take care of certain things but as you age, oh boy... the bill comes due. Always.

Oh if everyone else feels a certain way I should probably reconsider my opinion, got it.

The smoking was a dumb dumb dumb move. If that negates everything he's done to to fix his issues and vocal training then so be it and moves him into "never cared about his voice" territory, an incredibly wild way to phrase it, then so be it.

It's perfectly fine to respecfully disagree with something, talking down to people with "What don't you understand" absolutely good luck with that.

I personally don't have enough info about Jon's care of vocals in years of post-TD to LH. I only know he smoked. But since LH tour, we see him numerous times talking about and also doing several forms of preparations for shows, vocal coaching, etc.

Perhaps it's true he kind of neglected it in those prior years, but we cannot know except for smoking. Smoking was dumb, but as someone mentioned, other vocalists also smoked and smoke. I don't see it as major influence, or the most important influence.

Jon developed his nasal tone on Crush, evident already on album recordings. Only due to smoking? I'm not convinced

If anything, I would say he was most lazy with his vocals prior to SWW tour, as he went on that tour as complete and utter amateur, with no sign of any vocal knowledge on how to keep his fitness from day to day. He fried those vocals then and there, and we are frankly lucky that he got 20 years more out of them, especially the 90's

I don't think anyone is saying that smoking is the only factor here, just that starting to smoke is a pretty stupid decision for a singer.
