True, and especially for a singer singing on the very top of his range. It's different when smoking gives you your signature tone as Tom Waits or Mark Lanegan

Perhaps it's true he kind of neglected it in those prior years, but we cannot know except for smoking. Smoking was dumb, but as someone mentioned, other vocalists also smoked and smoke. I don't see it as major influence, or the most important influence.

Jon developed his nasal tone on Crush, evident already on album recordings. Only due to smoking? I'm not convinced

If anything, I would say he was most lazy with his vocals prior to SWW tour, as he went on that tour as complete and utter amateur, with no sign of any vocal knowledge on how to keep his fitness from day to day. He fried those vocals then and there, and we are frankly lucky that he got 20 years more out of them, especially the 90's
The difference between his vocals on These Days and Crush is night and day. between those two albums jon was smoking like a chimney while trying to become a movie star. Apparently it's was boring as hell being on a movie set so he smoked to pass the time.

Man, you are ever the optimist. I don't think they're gonna air that dirty laundry for us to see.

As far as Jon's vocal problems go: Him singing outside his natural range for 20+ years probably did more damage than the smoking.

True but I didn't think they'd get as specific as Richie disliking Shanks played guitar on The Fighter. I have every belief in the world he'll talk about issues with him.

based on what i've seen it doesn't look like richie will be sugar coating anything.

jon could've got another 10 years of that range if he didn't smoke, the crush vocals would've started around 2010 instead of 2000.

The drop in vocals between 1995 and 2000 was indeed rather extreme. Both in studio (which is more odd) and in live setting (though Jon, I think, kept his stamina on Crush and OWN tours). With Bounce tour he really started to struggle, and I do wonder, did he take vocal lessons then seriously as with LH tour? We don't have any sources on vocal coaching in 2000's before LH?

Perfect.

Not going to a doctor is one of them.

We're flat out saying Jon never went to a doctor about his vocal problems? Legit asking, I don't know if I missed that.

Don't see the need for personal insults. We're talking about Bon Jovi FFS, hardly a topic worth getting childish and petty over. Captain is arguing the opinion - which you or another poster made - that Jon was doing nothing on the documentary to protect his voice. As pointed out, the opening scene literally shows him doing something.
