Bon Jovi's 90's feels like a black hole.

So much stuff there that wasn't discussed at all... damn! I think it was worth, I always got the feeling that if Jon had the same success from the band he'd never do Crush.

This story itself is big enough to be told yet they rushed things out.

I personally loved the documentary. It was very well shot and put together, the director was very impartial and clearly a fan. Episode 2 and 3 were golden. Cadillac Man was a great moment, I shed a tear. A band that surely took care of their dirty laundry behind close doors... and yet a few key things really do come through imo:

-Doc McGhee definitely planted the seeds for the duo's break-up, it's a miracle they lasted so long having very different visions at the core. Once it stopped being fuel and it turned into fire, they were done.

-I'm glad Tico sorted himself out early on. He sounded like the worst of the bunch, drinking-wise.

-Jon's ego took a big hit in the last ten years and I'm glad it did - he's right about a lot of things and very wrong/delusional about other stuff but I'm pretty sure he was harder to deal with in the "let's-conquer-the-world" years.

-Shanks is a smart mother****er. He used Richie's hardest time as an in, becoming Jon's consigliere when Richie was taking a hit in his private life and couldn't give 100%. Unfortunately, it worked. ****, I'd be pissed off too if the band sidelined me in studio like that after 30 years. Richie was given the Alec treatment, and theirs were two very different situations. That bit about Have A Nice Day was brutal and now I know why I never liked him.

-Hugh looked like a guy who just did 20 years in jail and is now free when he finally said those words about being the ghost writer in studio. I smiled and laughed at the same time. We all love Alec but good for him.

All in all, it's clear to me all they really needed was a break between '05 and '10. Even a longer break in 2012 would've helped a lot. Richie couldn't promote AOTL properly cause he had to go on tour to promote an album in which he was basically sidelined cause the Micah Bell of the situation started whispering in Jon's ear? I'm sorry, Richie might be an alcoholic but in the long run I think he kept his integrity, good and bad, while Jon still needs him to make something great - just like this documentary. If seeing Jon on the verge of crying hurt, seeing Richie talking about missing his family or laughing nervously while clearly fighting with himself hurt a lot. The guy could've done so much more. Still, it was nice to finally hear him apologize about quitting overnight (his only true mistake imo).
Ultimately, Jon's obsession with his own legacy caused him to rush at a time in their lives where rushing wasn't an option for everyone involved. It took his wife telling him that show sucked to make him stop being delusional. That said, I love these guys to death - always will.

Bon Jovi FOREVER!

I loved the documentary. Watched all the episodes in a row. Brought back a lot of memories. Seeing the vulnerable side of JB made me respect him even more. The most heartbreaking moment was when he was lying on the dressing room floor in 2022, saying this was the worst show ever.

Gotta come back after I've watched the whole thing, but just finished the first episode and wanted to share some thoughts. Jon's comment in the first 10 minutes about how Phil X "stepped in and has filled in Richie's shoes fully" (close quote) made me yell "Bullshit!" at my TV. If I were Richie watching that with Jon I might've walked out right then and there. I found that comment extremely disrespectful to say the least, and I thought here comes more of the businessman Jon that is just doing this to promote himself and is not going to be honest with us. WWWB part II incoming.

However, then I spent the rest of the episode remembering why I love the man. Seeing Bruce and Southside discuss Jon playing in Asbury Park as a high schooler was awesome. Seeing his humble beginnings and the work ethic & determination he put into learning his craft was simply awe-inspiring. Then the final 10 minutes where the band was quickly put together made me yell "Hell yeah!!!" at my TV. Also Tico's introduction was hilarious, he remains the member of the band I would most want to have a beer with.

I don't know if anyone other than us die-hard fans would want to sit through a 5 hour documentary on this band, but I'm going to savor each minute and will definately be rewatching this. Extremely well made and a great way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of my favorite band.

Haven't seen it yet, just read some media reviews about it.
I am actually surprised how much coverage the documentary gets over here in German media. It gets covered by the usual entertainment/boulevard medias as well as from some serious ones.
The main topics they are writing about are Jon's vocals. How open-minded he handles this struggle and how vulnerable he shows himself in this documentary.
In all reviews, Richie's departure is only a sidenote in a small paragraph.

One review specifically said, and I'm curious what those of you think who have already seen it, that "at the end of the day this documentary's purpose is to make Jon look good:
- Excesses? Only other bands!
- Drugs? Only the other band members
- Women? He is married to his highschool-sweetheart"

Those are all things everyone around here knows. But when reading that review I found it very on point and very astonishing to read that kind of open-your-eyes-analysis in the media.

All of which is bullshit. We all know he wasn't faithful to Dorothea and as for the drugs, he was no saint in the 80's that's for sure...

Yeah, but sometimes fanbase is too hard on them, whatever they do would be wrong. I for one am very happy that documentary is out, that new album is soon out, that boxset is probably in making, that Jon is finally open about his vocal struggles. All of this just year or two ago would be a gift from heaven, and situation in Jovi camp seemed very dire.

We are talking about band 40 years in existence, anything is good, any sign of life. And this is mainstream attention pretty much. Guardian and Rolling Stone had really positive reviews, something an album didn't have in a long time (or ever).
