Okay, I’ve watched the video and I agree that I was concerned over nothing. I don’t see anything in this video that wasn’t in any of the videos from recent years. The primary focus is still on Jon, not the band; which is appropriate, given the line “I set each stone and I hammered each nail.” Even the creepy house wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. (Although when the roots shifted for a moment I have to admit I kinda freaked, thinking they were going to start slithering like snakes.)
I agree that Phil’s integration into the band was respectfully and tastefully done. I don’t see whatever it was I thought I might see, based on Rosa3's comment “I have to confess when I saw Jon pointing to Phil during his guitar solo, I don’t want to say it was a dig at Richie at all, but …” since the video didn’t even show Phil’s face at the time.
I'm afraid I can't agree that it demonstrates the shift in band dynamic that I hoped it would based on others' comments. IMO, it reinforces that it’s still Jon + the hired guns; not a band. The non-performance shots still draw a line between Jon and the other guys. The performance shots are the only ones that show the entire band together and, even then, the only one Jon makes eye contact with is David once or twice. It doesn't seem to promote a gang image at all to me; so at least they’re not playing that up as a promotion angle like I feared they might be from what others had said. Clearly, I should never read comments before listening to new songs or watching new videos.
Someone said the band looked happy, but I can’t see it. David, in particular, looks angry to me; but I guess that’s because of the aggressive stance that the song is promoting. In fact, throughout the video, the only one who actually looks happy to me is Phil; and that’s during the performance shots. He just seems to be a happy guy in general, though, so that’s not surprising.
As with the comments immediately following the release of BB when everyone was saying how fresh the sound was and how it sounded more rock, I guess ppl are seeing what they hope or expect to see in this video, too.
The only thing that bothered me about the video had nothing to do with either the band or the song. It was the fact that the film needed to be better synched with the song, especially after the bridge. The words they’re mouthing in the video are so far off from the song that it’s distracting. I’m sure that’s more of a production thing, though, so it’s no reflection on the band.
Overall, other the synching issue, I liked it. It fits with the message of the song. The band's look is fresh and has a rock vibe, without trying to seem younger than they are. There seems to be more energy than in previous videos. I do wish they would have used the same car in the cover picture and the video, though. I think that would have been a cool touch.
