Why would anyone call sauce "gravy"? Gravy is what goes on turkey, or potatoes, or biscuits!

Old Joysey 12-20-2014 01:44 PM

Americans of non-Italian origins usually call our Italian sauce "gravy" and the "war" has been a century-old running gag, especially in the 3-state area (well, OK, maybe not "century-old"... but close!).

In the early 2000s, when Bruce Springsteen inc. set up a forum on his official website, there was a famous "sauce or gravy" thread that lasted for dozens of pages and was so hilarious we would spill our coffee on the screen! And then it was exported to other Bruce forums with the same success. I don't know about BJ forums because I didn't read them back then...

I think you're generalizing too much. It might be a regional thing, but I assure you a Southerner would never call spaghetti sauce gravy because it's nothing akin to what we call gravy.

Yes, that's why I wrote "usually" and "especially in the 3-state area". ;)

To this ol' Arkansas native that's some fine dining. :D Especially if you toss some sausage in there.

Don't want to start anything but I am Italian (born in Italy) and live in New York and we call it sauce :) Drives me crazy when people call it gravy. I agree with Becky, gravy is what you put on mashed potatoes and turkey.
