What is I will drive you home about?
So I've got a vague interpretation but want to hear your thoughts...
Lyrics are roughly: I Will Drive You Home (written by Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Falcon, & Luke Laird) Here comes the next big thing, there's a new gun in town There'll be a faster one before the sun goes down They've come to kick the tyres, they'd like to take a spin See how it takes the turns, see if it breaks or bends But I will drive you home I want you to know that I will drive you home Hell, it ain't nothing new, everything new gets old Maybe some glitter's gone but we're still good as gold When some driver comes and tries to jump the start Thinks he can steal your love, hotwire your heart But I (I) will drive (drive) you home (home) I want you to know that I (I) will drive (drive) you home (home) Let 'em rev their engines, let 'em spin their wheels All they've got is shine, they're just chrome and steel But I (I) will drive (drive) you home (home) Here comes that faster fast, here comes that higher high As we walk on past, they just step aside I (I) will drive (drive) you home (home) I want you to know that I (I) will drive (drive) you home (home) Let 'em rev their engines, let 'em spin their wheels All they've got is shine, they're just chrome and steel When they raise the flag and the smoke has cleared When the rest are gone, I'll be standing here I (I) will drive (drive) you home (home) I want you to know that I (I) will drive (drive) you home (home) (Let them rev their engines, let them spin their wheels All they've got is shine, they're just chrome and steel When they raise the flag and the smoke has cleared When the rest are gone, I'll be standing here Let them rev their engines, let them spin their wheels All they've got is shine, they're just chrome and steel When they raise the flag and the smoke has cleared When the rest are gone, I'll be standing here) |
It's pretty much The More Things Change in subject matter.
Bon Jovi are here to stay no matter what flash new bands there are and whatever shiny new thing might attract you. A simple statement that they aren't going anywhere and will be the one to take you home. Picture that old song "save the last dance for me." (which now I think about it, isn't there a Jovi cover of that song somewhere? I'm sure I have it on an old bootleg.) |

To me, it certainly can be a statement about the band, but it also describes a steadfast, long term relationship or marriage and that dedication. |
I don't interpret it as a song about the band at all.
To me it's a love song. A guy's telling a girl that he's in it for the long haul and he's not like other men who are out just for the thrill. It's the classiest piece of music to come out of Jon in a long time. I really like it. |
For me it has the same meaning as Last Man Standing, in the sense that much cooler, modern bands or artists come and go, but he's still here, even though he's one of the mature artists.

This song can be interpreted both ways, both ticos_stick and crashed have very good interpretations of the song.
Either way you interpret it or even if you don't listen to the lyrics at all, the song is still amazing and beautiful. Seriously now, to me this is one of the their best songs ever, the melody is so beautiful and Jon's vocals are freaking perfect. I'm also a huge fan of the electronic vocals at the end, they make the ending of the song perfect. |
Bear in mind that's just reading the lyrics. Haven't heard the song yet, roll on Friday.
