David Bowie 1947-2016

Sadly he passed away in his sleep yesterday and had been battling cancer for a year and a half.

I wasn't really a fan of his music but he was a hero for many.

A genius at balancing visual style and artistic substance

NEVER allowing the former

to overshadow the latter.

Saddened and shocked by this. Such a brilliant artist, totally unique.

Absolutely respect his decision to keep his illness private but I think it makes it even more shocking.

Good time for the Jovi camp to release their version of Young Americans I reckon.

Really? They have done this?

My dad is a huge Bowie fan. Over 40 years now. He has been devastated all day.

Grew up listening to him and although a lot of stuff I didn't like, I certainly love more of his output than not like. Not many artists who do so many different styles of albums and looks than him. Legend is definitely a word to describe him.

So sad.

I guess he didn't want a lot of people making "drama" and "fuss" and "a four-star production" over him -- despite those being his specialties.

ANYONE can be a chameleon. Very few of us can be GREAT at being a chameleon. Being a great chameleon with great talent is what made Bowie a living legend.

The Chameleon is one of his many nicknames and he wasn't just anyone. No further description needed, sometimes less is better.

Lots of interesting and moving tributes here

Yeah during the Crush recording sessions.

I was just stunned when I heard this this morning. He released an album just last Friday. That's the way to go, I suppose--doing what you love, right until the end. He really was a legend.

I nearly crawled right back into bed myself!

The first thing I read was Richie's tweet -- I thought it was a belated tribute to LEMMY!
