Default Let's analyse Burning Bridges, the song.

Jon Bon Jovi said today that in the song "Burning Bridges" is all the informatio about what was the problem with the label.

Let's see if the colective brain that's DryCounty can figure it out, here are the lyrics (thanks to JackieBlue):

Chorus
Sayonara, adios, auf wiedersehen, farewell
Adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Here’s a last song you can sell.
Let’s call it “Burning Bridges”
It’s a singalong as well
Ciao, adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Play it for your friends in hell.

Someone shut the lights off, turn the page.
The stories I could write.
I’ve seen a million faces and I’ve lived a couple lives.
Here’s our history for all to see
The smiles and all the scars
First the rising, then the falling;
Call this chapter “Shooting Stars”
(Must sound good from where you are!)

Chorus
Sayonara, adios, auf wiedersehen, farewell
Adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Here’s one last song you can sell.
Let’s call it “Burning Bridges”
It’s a singalong as well
Ciao, adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Play it for your friends in hell.

Ah, check the box, yeah, mark this day.
There’s nothing more to say.
After 30 years of loyalty, they let you dig a grave.
Now, maybe you could learn to sing or even strum along.
But I’ll give you half the publishing;
You’re why I wrote this song
(Everybody, sing along!)

Chorus
Sayonara, adios, auf wiedersehen, farewell
Adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Here’s one last song you can sell.
Let’s call it “Burning Bridges”
It’s a singalong as well
Hope my money and my masters
Buy a front row seat in hell.

Ciao, adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Play it for your friends in … St. Tropez.

"But I'll give you half the publishing" "Hope my money and my masters buy a front row seat in hell".

So we can say that the label kept, for sure, all the masters of the band. I think they offered Jon a pretty shitty contract, with lots of Greatest Hits and he refused and left. Will give it some serious thought tomorrow as, right now, I just want to sleep.

Jackie posted that article about Irving Azoff's the other day that was pretty interesting. I think Jon said "screw you" to UMG and went with Azoff. Azoff benefits by having one of the biggest touring acts in the world under his umbrella and Jon benefits by having a marketing genius at his back. I think Jon will have more creative control under Azoff. Like why did he have to "make a deal with the label" to be able to follow his artistic interest in doing Lost Highway?

Some of the lyrics are pretty obvious--like Jon probably knows a lot of dirt on people at the label "the stories I could write" but he's saying there's been good and bad times.

Anyway, I noticed it sounded like even Tico was singing background this song (there's a deep voice in the mix) and is that Dave whistling?

This is why I like the song! I don't typically enjoy the style so much but I enjoy it because it tells a very personal story.

Also, we have to admit that Jon have the balls to write a f**k-you song especially for the grande Universal Label and release it on an album published by the same label! Awesome!

I'm sure they got offered a bad deal and decided to leave. Universal then maybe acted shitty towards them, hence this song. It surely wasn't amicable. I doubt we find out anything else from the Bon Jovi side, Universal may make a comment.

(Must sound good from where you are!)-

I don't understand this ... ... maybe for Richie?

Does everyone think that line is about Richie just because Jon and Richie played that cover of the song 20 odd years ago? Does Jon even remember he played that?

Shooting stars - the band are stars - the label has in some way perhaps shot them down/betrayed them/in general just pissed them off - therefore, shooting stars.

Someone shut the lights off, turn the page. - Jon is done and ready to start over with a new beginning.
The stories I could write. - Jon has seen it all, not just with the record co but his 30 year career/life... Hence the next line
I’ve seen a million faces and I’ve lived a couple lives. - A little 'Wanted' reference in there but again, he's had a massive career. Seen the world and has seen & done more in his 30 years than 20 people do in a lifetime.
Here’s our history for all to see
The smiles and all the scars
First the rising, then the falling - Jon's a public figure so we all saw the peak, we all saw them fail, we all saw them peak again, and so forth.
Call this chapter “Shooting Stars” - This chapter would represent where they currently are in their careers and more so with their record company. Jon is the star and the shooting star is him leaving the record company.
(Must sound good from where you are!) - Record executive sitting behind a desk getting what they want which is Jon's music without him being apart of it.

Ah, check the box, yeah, mark this day.
There’s nothing more to say. -He's done, it's over, he's ready to move on.
After 30 years of loyalty, they let you dig a grave. - This is the part where we could assume his contract wasn't renewed or he was fired, etc.
Now, maybe you could learn to sing or even strum along. - The record executives are just pencil pushers with no musical talent.
But I’ll give you half the publishing;
You’re why I wrote this song - The record company owns half of there current music (and probably more of their back catalog) - Jon's saying just take it! It's yours, We're done!

What a great way to go out. The last song on the last album after 30 years is Jon telling the record company to F off. By doing so, he is actually burning the bridges with them and titles the song 'Burning Bridges'
