Mine is a 5. I like the production (something I expected for the whole album), but the songwriting is terrible.

Intriguing how people see things differently.

I think there's a decent song in there that's been hampered by the production. The guy on YouTube who has covered it acoustically shows how different (and better) it could have been. That's just my take on it though.

I'd rate the song a 6.

So, I can't believe how many people don't like this song.

In my opinion, the depth of the lyrics, the production (which I find nothing wrong with) and the direction of the music are on the same level as It's My Life.

It's no Keep the Faith of course, but for me, this is right in line with expectations.

WDR was a massive surprise for me last year, because my expectations were at an alltime low. Knockout is on this same level, albeit a little more radiofriendly. But it packs the same punch.

The other album songs will definitely show a lot more depth and instrumental sounds. What I can't wrap my head around, with all the intelligence on this board and knowledge on BJ's history of the first 1/2 singles, that there's so much complaining about lack of depth and production on this song..

Depth and clear instrumentation don't sell!

True. But would you rather songs be written to sell or written to be good? To me the song is a throwaway live your life song. It's upbeat and aggressive, which I really like, but I didn't care for the ear candy of We Don't Run so I don't care for the ear candy of this. I STILL find it baffling how many people call We Don't Run the hit that got away and the savior of the post 2000 era and crap on this song.

some potential in there but sounds too different in comparison to the title track, i like the direction sounded underworked though, anyway it could be high octane live if jon can carry this out live

Haha yes of course, I agree on that. But I guess they have found that the depth of lyrics, and/or music are not primary factors for a hit. So I guess they compromise by having that sort of quality on the album songs, which I don't mind.

That said, Knockout ìs very simple and could have been given more depth, but maybe that's exactly where they didn't want to go with the song. We'll see what it does.

On WDR, I'd like to think so too. For me, the only other contender in that spot is LTOR, which I would have really liked to have been released (if only for the message). Do you have any other in mind, then?

Solid 8 for me,you just need to listen this song with good audio system and headphones where you can hear everything more clear not on android or laptop!

6 for me. Law of diminishing returns from We Don't Run, but mainly the poor vocals and fairly flat delivery and production. The song may be a throwaway song a la Complicated but it just doesn't have the conviction to impress me.

The annoying thing about the shanks production at time is that it masks the band. Jon's vocals need help we know, but you've got a shit hot drummer like Tico and you make him sound like he's playing a kids toy, or you've hidden Phil X under a load of layers of noise. For all the negatives, the band are still great and shanks should be bringing that out, not covering it up, and that's what is the difference between the song being an 8 and a 6 for me.
