I would think the producer has the base worked out and Dave comes in and perfects it to his style and way.

Well sure, the chord progression is already there provided by the song writers. Wouldn't THAT be the base and Dave comes in and plays it how he sees fit?

Yes. And maybe that's the way it's done on some songs. I think there is a little more to it though.

Most producers are multi-instrumental talented so I could see Shanks laying something basic down before passing it off.

This video reminded me why I once fell in love with this band! Awesome - just pure rock 'n' roll & fun!

Jon threw down a nice drum beat on Richie's guitar. I think he could secretly play other instruments but because he is the lead singer, he'll never explore outside of that scope.

I was actually at that show and thought it was the coolest thing.

Jon is so routine with everything he does so I love it when he steps outside the box.

Off topic but am I the only one who thought Jon pulling Rich Man into his solo set was awesome? That's one of my top ten box song favorites and for him to pull that one out was pretty cool.... Although Don't Leave Me Tonight might have been the absolute best a few years back.

I thought it was VERY cool and would love to see him go down that daring route more often.

It's like when he played a solo in the jam at the end of KTF on the last tour. Looking at it objectively, it really wasn't that good, but the moment and the spontaneity of it was what made it cool....
