Oh, I know all about that, just making the point of how long ago it was. The proper term is now "developmental disability." And nowadays, it's "person first, condition second" -- I have a grand-nephew is not "autistic" or "an austistic child" but "a child with autism" (who is doing grade-level work in a regular class).

(And speaking of the N word, there was also a study done back then when kids were asked if they'd rather have a candy bar that day or two candy bars the following day. Researchers noticed that most of the black kids asked for the candy bar that day, leading them to conclude that the race had a "gratification deferral" problem!)

"Developmental Delay/Disability" only applies up to age 9. By the age of 10 you have to have to be reevaluated to see if you qualify for another category or for anything at all.

I'm still not good with the "person first" language. It's annoying how they make us change our terms and language every few years to be politically correct. Changing the terms doesn't change the disability. For a few years it wasn't PC to say "MR" but that WAS still the legal term so I was having to meet with parents and use that term... uncomfortable!!!!!
