Not in UK. HAND was played a bit but not much.

I agree. If the fans catch onto this one, it could be a fun live song. I think there are a few on this album that could come off good live.

HAND was the last hit in Australia. Reached #8 and went gold. Got a fair bit if airplay here. Nothing since then.

I also still hear Superman Tonight, WWBTF, Lost Highway, and Because We Can on the radio. So they may not have been hits but they didn't fade into oblivion either.

It won the band their first Grammy Award! And it was the bands first #1 on the Country Charts (Hence the reason behind LH)... Actually Bon Jovi was the first rock artist, who crossed over into country, to have a number 1 hit on the county charts.

But even that was 10 years ago now

Me too, but then it might just be the label didn't want to extend the contract so not quite the same as being dropped, or said simply they are not going to promote any of Jovi's new stuff the way Jon would like them too and so he walked away. We'll never know unless Jon decides to tell us.

Even What About Now still sold over 1 and a half million copies - pretty sure the label will have pocketed a few million out of that.

Q: Is there a minimum number of copies they'd need to sell to break even?

A:There are many bands that would do just fine on smaller labels, but are contractually bound to labels that have mass-market economics. The list of bands with unreleased albums is ... well, long.

> For a major label, the break-even-point for CD sales is approximately 250,000 copies.

Note that artists are often dropped by majors when their sales fall below 1 million -- or for top artists, several million. Hell, EMI paid Mariah Carey $30M to walk.

Self-publishing seems like an answer, but it's a difficult proposition (in any field, not just music); there are fixed costs and minimum runs, and getting a retail-ready CD (as opposed to a concert card-table sale) involves sinking a bit of cash. The record industry works because of this; they front you the money and then you have to work it off, basically, through touring to support the album sales.

Who Says made number 5 in the UK, Have a Nice Day made 6, and then yeah it started to slide. Considering this is band without a UK number 1, I would say number 5 and 6 for those two singles from HAND is a solid hit... not a smash, but still.

I don't think they dropped them, I just think the terms of their contract have changed with Richie leaving. A record company will pump money in a project only if the terms are what they signed for, and yeah, in that case Jon might not get as much money from the label anymore to promote future endeavors.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
